Health

I totally believe that the body wants to heal itself, regardless of what doctors and pharmaceutical companies tell us; we just need to give ourselves the optimum conditions to do so ~ physically and emotionally……read on!

Constant State of Flux was set up primarily to set down in writing all the things I am learning daily from the net about health; both physical and spiritually. Over the course of research I have done for posts in this blog, I have made very fundamental changes in the way I see health issues. Before starting to write, I was a recovering long-term vegetarian; continually looking for the thing that would replace it, not totally convinced about meat eating – but liking it nevertheless, trying to come up with some plan that would improve my health conditions, but never being actually able to put my finger on something that worked for me. Back then, I had a cupboard full of supplements, a strict idea about what I ‘thought’ was good for me, (even though these things changed constantly) and continuing health problems.

I guess this scenario can be applied to so many people nowadays; wandering around in the minefield of information out there, suffering from a lack of support from any family or cultural traditions, taken over by fast food chains and convenience stores.

I’ve always been an amateur researcher into all things ‘healthy’ and for years read book after book on the subject. But in the last few years I have been researching the internet and spent hours pouring over site after site about alternative health; bowled over by the amount of information out there.

I now see the first phase of this blog, (up to 1st September 2007) as a kind of mental and physical detox period; a honeymoon set into motion by GDV analysis and certain issues regarding my daughter’s health. I was moving forward at a frantic rate, discovering site after site of alternatives in diet and lifestyle, sometimes being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of it, but nevertheless picking out things that rang true for me and storing them here in my magpie nest of a blog. I set out trying to impliment all the ideas I had ‘collected’ and made some pretty major changes to my routine; some for the better, some for the worse. But even then, I was always seeking to discover that ‘ultimate plan’ or ‘framework’ in which this fragmented jigsaw puzzle would sit…….I kept on digging……

I had really come up again a brick wall – I had researched all about cleansing, water, salt, candida, metal toxicity, chlorella, acidity/alkalinity and emotional issues amongst other things and although I felt I was greatly improving my health through rescue jobs such as colon cleansing, metal detoxing and alkali balancing, I still was just as confused about what I should be eating from day to day:

  • Is it better to be a vegetarian or meat eater and how come there are both meat eaters and vegetable eaters who have lived long and healthy lives?

  • Why does the Paleo Diet seem to have all the answers but not quite solve all the problems?

  • Why do people suffer from dairy and wheat allergies yet these food groups have been staples for mankind from the dawn of time (almost)?

  • If 5 daily servings of (raw) fruit and veg is the answer as we are now lead to believe, how come pre-industrial people who only had access to fresh fruit and veg for a short period during the year, (i.e. summer and autumn) stayed perfectly healthy and how come people who lived in mountain regions, (like where I live) showed no signs of physical disease, when snow lay on the ground for 5 months of the year, meaning vegetable growing was virtually impossible?

  • What did pre-industrial people really eat and what is that crucial factor that we are obviously missing in our modern diets; something to do with the type of food, the way it has been grown or raised, or the food preparation itself that we are getting so badly wrong?

All of these things lay heavy on my mind and I remained confused about what diet I should adhere to. I know quite a lot about food and have studied it pretty extensively for the last 15 years in an attempt to sort my own health issues out, but the more I researched it seemed, the more confusing it became: eat less meat, eat more meat, consume no dairy, consume no grains, eat soy products, avoid soy products, eat as the Japanese do, eat for your blood type, acid/alkaline type, eat raw, eat no fruit, eat only unripe bananas, consume only organic, but not food with a high air-mile footprint, allow yourself little pleasures, be strict with your diet, supplement, don’t supplement, eat frugally, eat as much ‘good food’ as you want, the list goes on and on…

Then, at the beginning of September 2007, I discovered Weston A. Price and Nourishing Traditions and the amazing fact that we had thousands of cows surrounding us producing raw milk! From there my research just exploded into a thousand different directions, encompassing enzymes, dairy, primitive diets (not paleo), mountain people, ear infections, asthma, teeth durability, the importance of grass, sunshine and intelligent management in livestock production, and many other facets of everything ‘cow’. I referred back to ‘milk sucks.com‘, which is doing a fantastic job for animal welfare and for informing people about the horrors (and dangers) of mainstream dairy production, for both humans, cows, the environment and the health hazards of drinking pasteurized milk.

I started to look at the cows here where I live; in the mountains they appear everywhere in small herds of no more than 40 animals, all grass fed, all happy, all brown and white and all milked and grazed out in the fields and rotated from pasture to pasture continually. All housed in the winter away from the harsh weather. I went to the local cremerie, a ten minute drive from my house, with empty milk bottles and had them filled with raw milk straight from the local cows, (which had three inches of cream on the top) I bought raw butter and raw milk cheeses. I fed them all to my dairy-free children and drank a glass of this milk after 15 years of milk-drinking abstinence. Suffice to say: I got involved in my surrounding cow scene.

I continued in this way until I came across the paleo diet in 2008 and started to eat more and more meat and fat, but two years after starting this diet, I began to get symptoms of chronic fatigue and depression again. I had effectively gone from being a vegan to a very low carb, very high meat eater within the space of 5 years and although I was healthy and happy, I was very very tired most days. My Gilbert’s Syndrome seemed to be under control but I knew my liver was not functioning properly.

Further confirmation of my situation came in 2011 when I suffered a mild anaphylactic shock from salon hair dye and knew that my liver was so congested that it could not cope with any sudden influx of toxins. I started to search into organ toxicity and came across cleansing protocols for the body and the home and made a commitment to get both as clean as I could.

It was then that I started to look further into diet and lifestyle choices and read a series of books which reconfirmed, yet changed all the things I had learnt previously about food (see my booklist). I read vegan authors and meat eating authors and ones that had eaten every configuration in between and realised that no one diet is suitable for everyone. I read about primitive diets around the world and realised that humans have thrived for millennia on very different foodstuffs from one another. Suddenly my journey and the journey of modern humans all started to fall into place. At last I knew why some people thrive on a raw vegan diet whilst others thrive on meat (something I had spent years pondering). There is no one formula for everyone; we are as diverse as our fingerprints, as different as individual snowflakes in a snow storm and when we discover our true diet, amazing things can happen to the body.

THE CLEAN UPS:

I then came across metabolic typing and I have booked a session with a metabolic nutritionist in the UK. In addition to this, I am starting to clean out my body, going through a series of cleanses, starting with the lymph system and ending up with a liver flush. Most of the poisons in our home have been removed already but as we are spending time this year renovating our home, I will be looking into low-toxicity options for the furniture and decor. At the same time, thanks to the life coaching course, I am starting to look into some deeper emotional issues that I know are still hanging around and need to be exorcised. Here is a list of all the clean ups I have tackled so far (with dates of those I have not):

Exciting stuff, but please don’t take anything I say on this site as bone fida – I am just a regular mum researching the electronic universe out there, looking for healthier solutions for me and my family. Find out for yourself and always question the motives of any website; read between the marketing lines and go with what you feel sounds unbiased and not out to make a fast buck.

So here is my contribution to the net’s ever growing number of alternative health sites. Thanks for visiting. Start on the categories if you are interested in looking further. Alternatively surf through some of the links ~ they really will change your view about health for the better.

If you have serious health problems, go talk to a professional, (not neccessarily a doctor) and research the internet till you can research no more. Write your own blog, every little helps – (then send me a link) the answers ARE out there under a minefield of hype; some people are out to inform and help us, others (the majority) to misinform and sell.

I hope this blog falls in the former category; I just wanted to be a simple (small) presence on the net, sharing my experiences with you and if you have stumbled upon me only to navigate onwards in your search, then I am glad and honoured that I have helped you get nearer to the answers you are seeking.

Good Luck.

Louisa.

p.s. I have quoted loads of stuff from other sites on this blog and I have always provided a link to the original page. Some links over time will break as the constant state of flux of the internet means that information will get lost in the sands of time. Don’t shoot the messenger.

  1. Hi Beatrix, I found your blog via Renaissance Henna and would be interested to know if you are still using the henna/indigo mx? I have developed an allergy to my hair colour ( see my latest post) and I am researching what to use on my hair instead. I would welcome your views….

Looking forward to reading the other posts on your blog….

    Jane

  2. Hi Jane! thanks for leaving a comment on my blog – I have been using http://www.renaissancehenna.com/ natural henna and indigo hair dye for 9 months now, and I have to say that it is superb. See some pictures on my blog:
    http://constantstateofflux.wordpress.com/2007/03/11/d-day/
go to the hair category on the sidebar for other hair info.

Your hair colour would really suit just using the henna, but I use indigo too to cover my grey!!! Henna is so subtle, looks fantastic in daylight and leaves your hair in the most fantastic condition.

I am just about to write another post about the up-to-date method I use for quick and easy henna dyeing, and review a couple of new conditioning products from Renaissance on my blog.

Re: lush – I love their stuff, but it may not be as natural as you think, the hair dye is good, but beware of the shampoos, which contain sodium laureth sulphate, (they are planning to remove this ingredient I heard), if you are sensitive, it may be wise to follow a no shampoo (no ‘poo) regime for a while – see my posts under the hair category for more info.

The most wonderful site I have discovered recently for all-natural yummy products is htp://www.anitagrant.com – no hair dye there yet, but other amazing things you must check out. She is the business.

By the way, I really love your blog – what a wonderful life you lead in the countryside. I live in the French Alps and have country and animals around me too! I am also a trained textile designer, although I write about family, health and nourishment now, I really love what you do, I will be reading your blog regularly from now on.
My ‘slice of french life’ is at http://quatrepattes.wordpress.com

    Good luck with the hair,
let me know what your results are, and Sabrina at Renaissance is wonderful if you have any questions!
    good luck,

  3. via email from Jane:
    Hi,
Thanks so much for your recent comment on my blog. I have been going through the henna debate and wondering whether to try it or not and your post made me feel so much better about the whole process! I will be very interested to read your updated post on the quicker method! I don’t mind it taking time at first and anything has got to be better than all the grey that is now starting to come through. Since the photo on my blog I have had a few caramel/toffee highlights put in my hair but it is still using chemicals and I really don’t like the grey that still comes through! The reason that I can have highlights is that it doesn’t touch the scalp so my skin does not absorb it but the coverage is not great on greys. It looks as if I am permantly growing out a colour! yuk! I have been reading Sabrina’s website really carefully and I might try to talk to her about it before I use the henna but I think that the highlights will come up more orange with the henna but hopefully will even up and go darker after using the indigo! If you have any experience with this I would be interested to know your viewpoint!

Well enough about hair! Thanks for the links to the other sites I am going to check them out. As you can see from the blog I am into anything alternative. I was so interested in some of your posts as well. You might have read that I am a Equine Shiatsu Practitioner so I get a bit of practice with Auras and healing! Have you ever had your Aura picture taken ? I did and it was truly fascinating. I also have been meaning to read Masato Emoto’s book and the memory qualities of water. A friend of mine highly recommended it to me…

You sound as if you have a wonderful time in the Alps and it must be wonderful for your children to grow up in such an environment…They grow up so quickly as you will find out….Your comment about the sock in the dressing gown pocket moved me to tears..

Hope to hear from you soon,
    Jane

  4. thanks for your email Jane, I was really inspired by your site.
I have grey sprinkled through my hair and they come out bright orange
after the henna, then I just cover them with indigo. I think you
should definitely try the henna, get the indigo too, just in case the
red goes too orange, you can put the indigo in for ten minutes just to
take the edge off it. Remember the colour darkens over the next three
    days too.
I was gobsmacked at how the colour covers the grey – and the colour
has never faded like synthetic dye tends to. I believe that synthetic
dye can be absorbed through the hair shaft too – so take care on the
highlights – but when you try the henna I think you won’t want to put
highlights over the top of it. I have now got the dye process down to
a fine art and my ‘dye day’ is relaxing and really nice. The first
time is abit of a pain but it really does get easier every time.

I did have my aura photo taken this year through GDV – it was
astounding the accuracies in my physical and emotional problems the
practioner picked up on, I have to say that the treatment really
changed the course of my health, for the better, it felt like a sudden
surge of wellbeing injected into my life, and I went on to make huge
discoveries through the internet, which I write about on my blog. Have
    you taken photos of yourself???

  5. via email from Jane:
    Hi TawnyHare,
The aura photo was taken about 4 years ago when I had just started my Shiatsu training and it was amazing the information that the practitioner was able to pick up and tell me. Can you tell me what GDV means or is? I have to say I have never heard of it! Whatever it is it sounds interesting….!
I emailed Sabrina yesterday afternoon after reading your email/comment and to her credit, bless her, she emailed me straight back! I have ordered the henna and indigo mix and I think I will have a try with it. It can’t be any worse than what I have at the moment! It does not look that bad at night but boy during the day! The light really does not do it any favours. I think I knew I had to do something when my husband called me ‘ Ginge’!
    Jane

  6. GDV stands for Gas Discharge Visualisation, and it is a method of taking Kirlian photos of your finger tips. From the finger tip photos, the whole body aura can be mapped, printed out and then analysed. Here are some photos of GDV analysis (the whole body aura photo is at the bottom of the post): http://constantstateofflux.wordpress.com/2007/05/26/gdv-and-me-a-new-way-forward/
here is some more info about the technique:
    http://kirlianresearch.com/gdv_aura.html
    good luck with the henna!
