wow, that sounds all so awesome louisa, it seems that you transitioned back into things quite well. I enjoyed your stuff when you went through the first awakening but now cleansing the human body to make it receptive to spirit work and following lifes splendid path. I just simply love your posts.

I would love to have a shamanic healer to come into my life to retrieve some lost parts of my soul. (hopefully now it'll manifest now that I've put it in writing.) ;)

That man doesn't sound very nice at all! Please believe me that not all beekeepers are like that. Most of us are very fond of our bees.

If you're trying to attract a swarm, bear in mind that bees are naturally most attracted to high up cavities where predators are less likely to be. If you want to attract them to hives on the ground, you can do things like putting lemongrass oil in your hive (smells like an attractive bee pheromone to them).

Once they are living in a hive, they are already to some extent in an unnatural environment, so they will benefit from some help from you. For instance, during the winter they will need a mouseguard put over the hive entrance to stop mice getting in, which can destroy a colony, or they might need chicken-wire put round the hive to protect them from woodpeckers.

Before you start keeping bees, it's a good idea to learn about common bee diseases and parasites - varroa mites (which are in every hive in the UK), European Foul Brood, American Foul Brood, nosema etc - so that you can help your bees out if they do have a problem. You don't want your colony to be a source of infection to your neighbouring farmer's 18 hives. If you sign up to the government's Beebase website for beekeepers in England and Wales - https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/beebase/index.cfm - you can get regular newsletters giving advice on avoiding diseases and they send an inspector to give your bees a health check once a year.

Happy beeing :)

Great, Louisa, See you have the bee-bug! Simon Buxton's book was definitely one of the things that got me going.
You are right, much of modern beekeeping is very controlled. We have had an apiary across the fields from where we live where the husband and wife keepers make their own hives. There are some designs for hives at http://beelore.com

I am sure bees would love to share your garden :)

It is a shame that some keep bees only for honey like the man in your story (not really a true beekeeper) and handle them so clumsy. Bees are extremely sensitive and stress can make them unhealthy (just like people). Unstressed bees that are handled gently and with care and patience are often stronger and healthier colonies. I am looking forward to reading your bee adventures this year!

Houses for solitary bees are lovely to keep in the garden too :)

I agree with your view of bees. You may want to read Michael Bush's Practical Beekeeping. He is a big proponent of letting bees be bees. As for myself, I leave my bees alone as much as I can. I keep bees because I love them, not because I'm trying to harvest honey.

Thank you for this post, Louisa. This is a gift I got from both my mother & grandmother especially. To delight in another person's presence so that it lights up your soul and shines out through your eyes - all it requires is being present to the moment & aware of what feeds you! If I can do that once today, I'll call it a fantastic day! Thanks for the reminder.
